I've decided that whatever I'm feeling is ok. I've been riding the emotional rollercoaster the past few weeks for various reasons and like most people, when I'm down, the self-doubt and negative talk kicks in. It doesn't feel nice and nobody wants to stay there for long. But life will always present uncomfortable times and the point is not to avoid the discomfort but to utilise it. Most people feel discomfort, immediately think it's wrong, or there must be something wrong, or they are wrong. They get stuck in the discomfort as if it's a solid wall, and look for ways to go around the wall, usually in some form of escape like alcohol, too much TV, overworking etc. A better approach is to recognise there's a door in the 'wall of discomfort', look for the message in the discomfort (key to the door), process what's underlying the discomfort (open the door) and walk on through to something new. Processing discomfort or dissatisfaction requires three steps:
When you learn to view your discomfort as an opportunity for growth rather than a dead-end, it gets easier to accept all kinds of feelings, not just the good ones. I'd rather grow through the process than spend my life avoiding. Funnily enough, I feel better already just knowing this. How do you feel about this? With love, Melissa PS I'll be talking more about the three steps on socials, so make sure you tune in to one of my groups - details for both are below if you're not already a member.
