5 must-do habits to include in your morning routine (if you want to win the day)

Have you had one of those days when it started out wrong and just got worse from there? What about one where you woke up feeling great and everything seemed to work out all day long?

It’s true that how you start the day has a massive impact on the rest of it. How you’ll feel, what you’ll achieve, your amount of inspiration and happiness. It is, of course, possible to turn a bad start into a great day but I’m lazy so I think why bother with all that extra time and energy putting out fires when you can just get it right, to begin with. It’s absolutely worth setting yourself up with an awesome morning routine that is going to help you win each day.

Here’s the thing about your sleep time. When you sleep, your thoughts lose momentum and slow down enough for you to rest and reset. When you wake, they pick up again, often from where you left off the day before. If you’re smart, you’ll do what you can to shape and direct your thoughts from the moment you wake until they have momentum again.

What you do in the first 30-60 minutes of your day is super important.
So how can you better direct your thoughts each morning?

Aside from making sure you get enough sleep so you’re not waking up tired and cranky, here are 5 easy and powerful ways to pack that first hour full of positivity.

  1. Me time before any other time. Commit to some time that is just for you before you give to anyone or anything else. This is an act of self-love and a perfect way to begin. The activity itself is not as important as the fact that whatever you are doing makes you feel good! It might be a cup of tea while you read or a meditation or a workout. This is ‘fill your own cup’ time.
  2. Find things to be grateful for and pay attention to what is working in your life. Your brain naturally looks for problems with the aim to avoid them, so here’s where worry and stress easily kick in. You have to make an effort to notice the good things. Think about what or who makes you feel happy and acknowledge it’s presence in your life every day. So simple, so powerful.
  3. Your morning routine should be news, social media, and email free if you are taking charge of your thoughts and feelings. Purposefully direct your attention on what you want rather than having it directed for you. All these things will still be there for you mid-morning so you are not missing out.
  4. Spend five minutes focusing on your day ahead and what you want to achieve. Since you’ve already got your day planned out from the day before (right?), you’ll be clear on what your goals are and what you want. This is exciting and inspiring, as opposed to letting your thoughts wander to worry about all the things you think you need to do.
  5. If you’ve got children who depend on you for their breakfast and bum wiping or don’t understand ‘me time’, get up at least an hour before they do. Gift yourself a powerful morning routine instead of being woken by the demands of gorgeous little people or the latest Minecraft story.

It’s not about following a specific routine, it’s about finding what works well for you and making it your routine. You’ll be amazed at the difference it makes to start your day in a high-vibe and focused way, and over time you’ll experience the powerful gift of taking time for yourself on a  regular basis.

Consistency is key, so pick one thing to add in and gradually build your perfect morning routine.
