5 top self-care tips for every micro/small business owner

31/8/2020

I know you’re excited and highly focused on growing your business and there’s so much to do. It really can be incredibly time and energy-consuming. All the more reason why I’m going to make a case for excellent self-care right now.

You see, even when you love what you do, you can burn out if you’re not paying attention to the very heart of your business. That’s you! Without you, your business isn’t going anywhere. So if you’re pushing too hard, lacking healthy boundaries or neglecting your relationship, health, kids, friends, or whatever… take these 5 top tips to heart now and do something about it before it’s too late.

[Quick note - burnout is not fun nor is it a badge of honour. It’s shit. Period.]

Picture
#1 Get organized in your business and in your life
Grab your calendar or planner and figure out what needs to be done and by when it needs to be done. Plan, prioritize, and schedule your week so you know exactly what’s coming and roughly how long it will take.
You’ll immediately feel more clarity and less stress, simply by having a good plan. And bonus benefit, when your brain knows what to expect, it’s much more likely to get on board so you actually follow through on your plan.

#2 Communicate your needs to others
Do you expect everyone around you to read your mind and know what you need? Check-in often with yourself on what you need, and learn to express it to your partner, children, friends, co-workers, employees, etc. Do you need quiet time to focus, time alone, a hug, someone else to do that admin task, a romantic dinner date, a friendly ear?
Have the conversations with the people who can help and give them the opportunity to support you.

#3 Learn to say no
Stop feeling obligated to say yes to every single person who asks for your time and energy. You may even need to prioritize your work or your self-care over something you enjoy, like going out for coffee with your girlfriend on a moment’s notice. Plan it in at a time that truly works for you and doesn’t de-rail the rest of your day.
Quit chasing every shiny object and rabbit hole in the entrepreneurial world. It’s the information age and you are signing yourself up for overwhelm and stress if you are constantly distracted and never completing anything. Pick what is relevant to your path and apply it.

#4 Get enough downtime away from the business
Life is not all work and no play and seriously, your brain needs to switch off from the business sometimes. It’s the only way to refresh and recharge and funnily enough, some of my best ideas pop up after downtime. Read a book, workout, take a walk, watch a funny movie, go dancing, or have a conversation with a friend about what’s going on for them. There are a thousand ways you can have downtime. I’d suggest doing what feels great and fills your cup.

If you feel stressed and pushed for time as it is, schedule your downtime into your week and day and DO NOT skip it because you need to respond to that email or post about your lunch on social media. Everyone can find time in their week for what’s important to them. So it’s your time to make self-care more important.

#5 Go outside and feel the elements
We know that fresh air, sunshine, and nature provide amazing benefits to our minds and bodies. This one is particularly useful if you spend too much time in your office, staring at the computer screen. There’s a whole world out there and you’ll feel so much better for being a part of it.
So drink your next coffee in the backyard or on your balcony, go for that afternoon walk on the beach or around the neighborhood and take time to notice what’s outside your four walls.

Yes, there are a million other self-care tips you can use, but I wanted to dig deep and find just a handful that will have a huge impact on your wellbeing. If it still feels difficult to get started, just pick one, implement it for a couple of weeks and be amazed at the difference it makes.

Let me know how you go with leveling-up your self-care so you can sustain your business growth and success.

The messages of your emotions and how you can hear them

24/8/2020

If I were less emotional I’d probably get a lot more done. But I’m not a robot, I’m a fully functioning human being, the real deal, messy as it can be at times.

There is often a super high expectation placed upon the entrepreneur to be this high-performance machine, avoiding the lows at all costs and being productive all the damn time.

How unrealistic are we? Perhaps you even hold yourself to that expectation (you wouldn’t be the first).

Your emotions are never wrong!

[ “What? But Melissa you are always saying I need to stay high vibe, feeling good.” ]

Ok, let me explain.
Your emotions always have a message for you and the more you look and listen, the easier it’ll be to work through the low times. Heck, nobody wants to stay in that feel-crap place right? I get it, you do want to be productive and moving toward your dream. Running in circles or having your feet stuck in cement just ruins your shoes.

But you never want to make your emotions wrong. That is a surefire way to cut off your connection to your own truth and honest communication with yourself and others. Nobody wins with this approach.

Instead of feeling ‘wrong’ when you’re not feeling good, many of the world’s best coaches suggest that you get curious instead. Learn to be ok in whatever the feeling is and search for the message it’s delivering. This is far more useful and can actually help you solve the problem.

Picture

Accepting your emotions and working with them rather than fighting them is going to feel so much easier and get you back to a powerful, beautiful, productive state sooner. You will bypass the suffering and get better at managing your emotions. Which is good for your sanity and your business.

It’s helpful to remember that whatever uncomfortable emotion you are experiencing, you’ve probably been there before. Instead of crumbling every time things go wrong, you can remind yourself that you will get through it. You have evidence in your past, that the sun will shine again.

So you’ve got this! You’ve been through it before and you can handle it today and if it happens again in the future, you’ve got that too.

Which if you really think about it, is kind of exciting. Permission granted to feel any and all emotions, and tune in to what’s going on rather than suppressing it, and the confidence that whatever may come, you can handle it.

Now you are mastering your emotions and building resilience and not wasting so much time and energy pretending everything is hunky-dory (for my overseas readers, that means alright) when it’s not.

To sweeten the deal, the more you take charge of your emotional world, the more you‘ll begin to embrace the idea that you can, in fact, respond to events in your life, however you choose. But let’s dive into that next time.

10 things to remember when you feel like you’re failing

17/8/2020

It’s tough when you’re down and you feel like getting back up again is more effort than you can muster.  There have been plenty of times in my life, business and relationships when giving up appeared to be the best option.
The truth of life is that it will test you. It will ask you over and over to keep demonstrating your commitment, to show just how bad you want something. Why is it like this? Because life requires you to grow. If you’re not growing you’re dying and so it needs you to keep learning and evolving as a human being. As you strive for something better, something more you will have ample opportunity to pick yourself up again and keep moving forward.

But nobody said it’s an easy ride, and so here are 10 things to remember when you’re in the thick of it and it all feels too hard.

  1. “Failure is an event, not a person.”
Zig Ziglar is reminding us in this that just because we failed at something, doesn’t mean we are a failure. Separate your identity from the events in your life, they are not you. Who you are is someone who is trying, putting in an effort and learning, not the outcome of a particular event.

  1. Every little step counts
As long as you are putting one foot in front of another, you are moving toward what you want. It can feel like you are stuck but 99% of the time there’s another move you can make. As Tony Robbins says, “if that doesn’t work, try something else, and if that doesn’t work, try something else and if that doesn’t work, try something else.” You get the idea right?

  1. Be true to yourself
Strive to live up to your own desires and truths and not the expectations of others. It’s hard to succeed at something you don’t believe in.

  1. A moment in time is just a moment in time
Don’t define yourself by your current circumstances. It’s not an indicator of what you are capable of. There’s always more to learn so pick your path and keep growing.

  1. You are in charge of the internal dialogue
Human beings are meaning-making machines and we love to tell stories, even to ourselves, around what it means. What story are you telling yourself? Is it helpful? Perhaps it’s time to tell a different story that’s more supportive of your success and doesn’t make you feel like crap.

  1. Open up to the lessons
The same lessons will keep repeating in your life until you learn them. Look for the lessons so that you can evolve and move on.

  1. Ask what’s working (and do more of it)
Re-direct your focus to what is good in your life and what makes you feel happy, joyful, alive, grateful, or connected. Give your time and energy to those things and watch how life begins to flow.

  1. Today and tomorrow are connected
Giving up today means you are giving up on tomorrow. Do you want to stay in the game? I’m sure you do, so take a deep breath and do something, even if small, to keep going.

  1. Be courageous
Obstacles present you with an option either to face the challenge and grow through it or keep hiding from what is holding you back. Be ok with the discomfort and decide that your wants are bigger than your fears and doubts.

  1. Keep it simple
Your big dreams can feel too difficult to achieve unless you break it down into manageable size steps. Fuel a sense of achievement by setting smaller, simpler goals that are moving you closer to the big outcome.

You’ve got this! When it feels like failure, remember you are an amazing human being on a unique journey. Think of how far you’ve come already.

The 80:20 rule that most people wish they could ignore

6/8/2020

You’ve probably heard it, achieving your big dreams and goals requires you to grow as a person and get outside of your comfort zone.

Oh, how much easier would it be if it were mostly strategy (the how-to) and hardly mindset and growth? Someone could tell you how to do, you do it and ta-da, it’s done!

That is in fact, how many salespeople and business coaches present their product and draw you in, in hope of a quick and easy fix to your problem. Whilst their particular strategy or product is not wrong, it’s also not complete.

The general consensus is 80% of the work needed to succeed at achieving a big goal is internal. And your success largely depends on whether or not you can get your thoughts and feelings under control.

Thoughts and feelings. Mindset and emotions. The beliefs you have about things and the reactions you have to certain experiences.

This is where it begins to feel too hard and most people either don’t know how to do the inner work or are afraid of the changes, so they continue looking for an easier way. They read all the books, try the next shiny strategy, hire the next business coach that promises their solution is what truly works.

Unfortunately, none of it works unless you work. You have to put in the work, take the action, make the call, get out there. And what stops you from doing all that is your thoughts and feelings.

The strategy is important and has its place. You are more important and need to work through your resistance, fear, procrastination, and doubt. Your big beautiful dream requires you to take action and that action requires you to stop sabotaging yourself because you haven’t done the internal work.

The internal work is two-fold.
  1. Developing a mindset for success.
  2. Healing old wounds.

Mindset for Success
Your mindset put simply, is the attitude and attached beliefs or ideas that you have about life and business. It determines how you will respond to and interpret different situations.                               Your mindset will determine how you handle setbacks in life and business.

A poor mindset will see you giving up at the first hurdle. A mindset for success will allow you to meet the challenges, grow through them, learn from them, alter course as needed but always keep your eye on the goal and keep taking action and moving forward towards your success.

True transformation
Developing the right kind of mindset is absolutely necessary, getting positive, setting goals, implementing new habits. But there’s a deeper level to the internal work that holds the secret to unlocking the real transformation. The healing of old wounds and letting go of beliefs that don’t support your success is a powerful undertaking that creates lasting change and will stop you from self-sabotaging.

It’s not the pretty, easy, or shiny solution but if you’re serious about your big dreams, don’t shy away from the very thing that will give you true freedom.

When you learn to overcome your self-sabotaging behaviours you can create any level of success that you choose. I’m always continuing to work on up-levelling but I’ve come a long way from barely scraping by on a single parenting pension, to building a business doing something I love and supporting my family. From ‘how will I pay the bills?’ to 5-figure months and from living my life from a place of desperation to personal power and inspiration. I’ve even broken my history of disastrous, dependent, even abusive at times relationships and found genuine love, respect and stability.

What is your big dream and are you willing to go all-in for it?

If like me, one of your goals is to build a successful business that positively impacts the lives of others and creates financial abundance for you and your family, I have a special invitation for you below.

Be willing to go all-in to have the life you want. You’ll never regret giving it your best shot.

Ready to up-level your business and your life?

I’m looking for 10 women who’ve had enough of the struggle in their business who want help to stop self-sabotaging and start creating real results in the next 2 months.
Are you looking for help to grow both yourself and your business?
I’ve created a powerful framework to help female entrepreneurs just like you, to overcome the self-doubt and procrastination in a 10-week experience. I’m looking for 10 ladies to join me as Beta Testers to run through the system.
Would you like to join 9 other women dedicated to their dreams over the next 10 weeks to accelerate your success and become unstoppable?
If you answered yes then go here for details.

Don’t wait for one day: 3 easy ways to turn your wildest dreams into actionable goals

Don’t wait for one day: 3 easy ways to turn your wildest dreams into actionable goals

So you’re dreaming of something more, something better, something amazing for your life. You’ve got vision and big ideas, but where no clue where to begin.

When it comes to your wildest dreams, finding clarity and getting into action can feel daunting. After all, these are the big, life-changers and how do you even make a start on something so grand?
Below are three of my favourite, easy (because we like easy) ways to go from dreaming to doing.

Number 1 See yourself in the future and break it down
This one’s for you if you want your goal-setting to be fun and easy. Based on Rachel Hollis’ 10:10:1 rule, turning your beautiful dream of a better future into actionable goals doesn’t get much easier than this. Here’s how it works:
  1. Imagine your ideal life 10 years from now. Really go there and dream it up in all its detail without holding back. Where do you live? What do you look like? How do you spend your days? How much money do you make? Who do you spend time with? What work do you do? How’s your health? How do you feel?
  2. Write down ten dreams that must come true for this ideal life to happen.
  3. Turn those dreams into specific, actionable goals and pick the number one, top goal to get started on.
  4. Tada! You are on your way.

Number 2 The mega-list
Another favourite is to brainstorm a mega-list of anything and everything you want to achieve in this lifetime. It goes like this:
  1.  Put pen to paper and write down any and all ideas that pop up. Again, don’t hold back, anything is possible and at this stage, everything is allowed on the list.
  2. Go through your list and number each item 1, 5, 10, 20 years etc. according to the timeframe in which you want to accomplish it by. This gives you an idea of what your short, medium and long term goals are.
  3. Make a new list of your one year or less goals, (break it down further into 3, 6 and 12 months if you like) and pick your top goal to get started.
  4. Just like that, you now know where to begin.

Goals by life area
If you’re more of a thorough, systematic individual, you may prefer this method to set goals in a balanced way in all areas of your life.
  1. Begin by compartmentalizing your life into different areas eg. relationships, work, finances, health, parenting, social, spiritual, etc.
  2. Think through each of these areas and write a description of how you would ideally like that part of your life to be. A mini ideal vision statement.
  3. Create 1-3 goals for each life area that will help you achieve your vision.
  4. Pick your top priority goal and get started.

It really is that easy to come up with a list of goals for your life. If you’re feeling resistance to the idea of goal-setting, start small with your focus on only the next 12 months. Any of the above methods can be used for a shorter time period.

Don’t forget the 3 most important goal-setting rules

Plan from positivity. When you’re setting an intention or goal, be sure to do it from a high-vibe place of gratitude and an awesome attitude. You’re hardly going to set great goals if you’re feeling miserable or pessimistic, so get yourself in a high energy, feel-good state before you sit down to plan out your life.

Goals must be specific and measurable. Be clear about what you want to achieve and how you will know when you’ve achieved it. Setting a goal to lose weight or make more money is neither specific nor measurable. Saying you want to drop 10 kilos before New Year or make $145,000 in the current financial year, is both. This kind of clarity allows to you make a plan for reaching your goal.

One thing at a time. Setting goals is easy but taking action can get overwhelming if you let it. So only work on one big goal at a time. Seriously, do not try and overhaul your entire life in one go. It’s a recipe for procrastination and giving up. For sure you can have a few small and ‘not too difficult’ goals on the go at the same time, like drink a green smoothie every morning and talk with 5 potential clients each week. But those big, audacious goals of yours, best to take them on one at a time so you can focus your energy and go all in.

So what are you waiting for? Put it in your calendar when you’ll do a goal-setting session and get the clarity you need to start bringing those beautiful dreams to life.
