How to stress less about Self-promotion on Social Media (part 1)

14/2/2022

The online social world is a bustling and often crowded space. When you want to promote your message and your business, standing out enough to be noticed by your ideal clients takes quite a bit of courage and commitment.

It can feel intimidating and overwhelming to put yourself out there at all, let alone figure out how to show up in a way that’s impactful. If you’ve felt resistance of any kind when it comes to self-promotion, read on as I’ve got some great tips for the most common problems I hear about from my clients and my audience.

Whether you find yourself procrastinating, feeling nervous, undoubtedly in hiding or being inconsistent, here are a few practical steps you can take right now to start showing up with confidence and ease.

Problem #1  I don’t even know where to begin

You’ve most likely heard a ton of ideas on how to get more Visibile and attract clients. That last webinar you attended was full of tips and tricks and you wrote some of them down but it’s all feels too overwhelming.

Where do I start? What should I post? Where should I show up? Where are my ideal clients? What will be effective?

When you feel overwhelmed it’s a message from your mind that you are trying to do too much, and your brain is scattered because haven’t prioritised. Overwhelm is a useful signal, there’s nothing wrong with you, the key is to pay attention to the message.

What to do:
Grab your pen and paper or open a doc on your computer and write it all out. Every to-do, from the ginormous to the tiniest of tasks, all the ideas you’ve got, all need to get out of your head and into words.

Go through your list and draw a heart next to the ones that are most important ie. they will have a positive impact on your business AND you have the resources to do them (think time, energy, skills).

Cross out any ideas that don’t feel right for you. I would even suggest writing a new list with only your top ideas (it’s safe to forget the rest for now), then picking one task and taking action on it immediately. You will begin to feel better in no time because now you are no longer stalled, you are progressing. Rinse and repeat.

Problem #2  I’m an introvert and I’m terrified of putting myself out there

What’s your biggest introvert nightmare? Is it showing your face on social media, live video, networking events? Well, you might not like this news but being an introvert is no excuse for not revealing yourself. Many successful entrepreneurs are introverts and you can be one too.

In fact, many extroverted people have the same insecurities as you do, they just take a different (often louder) approach to dealing with them. As an introvert, you will need more recharge time because these kinds of activities take your energy instead of giving you more. Don’t let that stop you, plan accordingly.

What to do:
From this moment forward, you can no longer use the “I’m an introvert” excuse. Take small steps to grow your confidence and trust in yourself, do not doom yourself to a lifetime of hiding due to a personality trait.

What’s not a personality trait is confidence! That’s what you need to get out there and be seen. So remember how capable you are and plan your promotion in bulk. In other words, create and schedule your content so it’s not a daily task.

Problem #3  I don’t know what to talk about, I’m confused about what to share

There are 2 keys to knowing what content to share with your audience. Firstly, who are they? What are they interested in and what do they need to know? Secondly, who are you? What’s your story and how do you help?

If knowing what to say or write about has you stumped, let me simplify into three easy categories for you to start with.

1.    talk about yourself and your experiences so that people can get to know you
2.    talk about the results your service/product gets for your clients
3.    talk about the things that are the biggest problems for your audience – if you’re not sure what they are then you need to find out. Ask them!

Whatever you do, do not hide behind pretty stock images, your logo and a bunch of positive quotes. Those things have their place but they don’t create a real connection with your audience.

What to do:
People need to know about you and what you do before there is any chance that they’ll want to work with you. Make it clear and easy for them with clarity and consistency.

So which one got you nodding your head the most?
Stay tuned for part 2 next week when I dive deeper into confidence, self-belief, imposter syndrome and fear of rejection.

In the meantime, stop hiding your amazing self away from the world. You’ve got people to serve and they need to be able to find you.
